Students Write Their Ideas For Education Reform Into A Bill

March 10, 2017 – Education reform is often a topic of fierce debate during the legislative session. This year, lawmakers passed a bill that eliminated evaluation penalties for teacher absences. Teachers are allowed 10 sick days each year but are penalized for taking more than three. On Marcy 9th, Governor Susana Martinez vetoed that legislation.

Other bills that would change testing or evaluations include SB 470, which was written by a group of high school students from the Corrales International School. Producer Sarah Gustavus visited their class recently to hear how teacher Lisa Tiger incorporated research and editing of legislation into her curriculum. And NMiF followed the students to Santa Fe on the day they testified in the Senate Education Committee about their bill.
