The Line: Trump Executive Order And NM Reactions

February 3, 2017 – President Donald Trump used his executive authority last week to restrict access to the United States from certain Muslim-majority countries. UNM and NMSU, along with institutions across the U.S., have urged students who are affected by the executive order not to leave the country.

There were demonstrations at airports across the country last weekend by people who disagreed with the president’s executive order and wanted to show solidarity with travelers and green card holders. There was a protest at the Albuquerque International Sunport.

New Mexico Attorney General Hector Balderas and 15 other state attorneys general called the executive order “unconstitutional” in a statement, saying:

“…we condemn President Trump’s unconstitutional, un-American and unlawful Executive Order and will work together to ensure the federal government obeys the Constitution, respects our history as a nation of immigrants, and does not unlawfully target anyone because of their national origin or faith.”
