Cannupa Hanska

Website

Santa Fe ceramicist Cannupa Hanska creates playful, fierce, and fantastical creatures.

“I find truth to be really rigid and fragile whereas honesty and sincerity have a level of pliability, plasticity, it’s flexible. It reminds me of storytelling, of more of an oral tradition than a written history.”

John Gurche

Website

Wanting to know what it was like in the prehistoric age, John Gurche creates scientifically based artwork.

“To actually give vent to some of the aesthetic feelings that come from the field, which are rich in this case, you have to venture into the realm of art, I think.”

Dunya Mikhail

Website

Fearing persecution, poet Dunya Mikhail escaped her home country of Iraq. Her poetry deals with questions of national and cultural identity.

“When you write a poem in your language, you write it one time. And when you think in the other language and try to write a poem in the other language, I feel as if it’s a new poem.”

Bill Reid

Website

Artist Bill Reid creates metal creatures that are anything but stiff. They move…some even fly.

“I get a lot of “you must have a lot of time on your hands.” But many people, I think, get a smile out of them. It’s kind of a different language.”
